Regionally there was a large tobacco industry located in Bellevue, PEI. The original “Ben” that turned what was known as Prowses Pond into what is now “Ben’s Lake”, grew tobacco in the area until shifting his focus to fish. He purchased the property in 1980 and opened it as a private fishing destination in 1983. Ben’s Lake was processing fish for grocery markets and quickly became a legendary local fishing hole as PEIs only private fishing preserve with the biggest Rainbow Trout you can find in Island waters. The property operated as a hatchery for Rainbow Trout and Atlantic Salmon for a number of years. Eventually changing hands and shifting focus, Ben’s Lake now strives to be a nature camping destination and unique interpretive park surrounded by rare-to-PEI ecology and local wildlife.
